Plenty of local business websites look great but don’t generate enquiries. The difference between a pretty website and one that converts is rarely the design: it comes down to these 12 elements.
The checklist
- A clear value proposition in the first few seconds: what you do and who it’s for, no waffle.
- A call to action visible without scrolling: call, message or book.
- Tappable WhatsApp or phone number on mobile, always within reach.
- Fast loading speed, especially on mobile.
- Genuinely mobile-first design that’s easy to use with your thumb, not just nice to look at.
- Real social proof: reviews, case studies and results, with nothing invented or exaggerated.
- Contact details and location that are easy to find, not buried in the footer.
- A short first step, asking only for what’s essential.
- Content that answers real questions before the customer has to ask.
- One page per service or need, not a single generic services page.
- Nothing that distracts from the main goal: unnecessary pop-ups, too many links.
- Tracking set up (analytics and pixel) so you know what works and what doesn’t.
The underlying mistake: treating your website like a brochure
A website that doesn’t convert is usually built like a digital brochure: it tells people who you are but doesn’t guide visitors towards a specific action. A website that converts is built like a conversation, with a single goal per page.
